about

Inspired by BLM and frustrated by the rallying cry for solidarity without actionable steps taken to improve representation and diversification, Eki’Shola decided to bring her own vision to fruition. No longer waiting for space to open up, she created her own by founding Unmute Magazine, a publication featuring BIPOC creatives. Spurred on by months of reflection, heavy discussions, and collaboration with local advocates, Talks of 21 was birthed - a personal anthem to keep pushing because the “work is never really done”. Eki’Shola, a solo musician teams up with drummer, Justin Ciechoski on the track. Recorded at Prairie Sun Recording Studio during the pandemic, this single marks the debut of collaboration between the two artists.

lyrics

Music for the masses
Processed food for the lot
Numbing conformity
Fear stirring the pot

Drinking the worry away
Pill-popping the anxiety
Gorging on plentiful vices
To snuff out the life in me

Easier to control
To be jerked like puppets
Give them a little crumb
But power high above you it sits

When do we truly see
That change comes from you and me
Emerging from the cocoon
With awareness and ability

Tired of injustice
Inspired by the youth
Work is never really done
Talks of 21

We’re more than a hashtag
Full of strength, courage, and intellect
Y variables flow, X a constant
Life’s an experiment

Tired of global commiseration
The state of personal enslavement
Let you and I do something
Many battles but now what can we do with them

Easier to control
To be jerked like puppets
Give them a little crumb
But power high above you it sits

When do we truly see
That change comes from you and me
Emerging from the cocoon
With awareness and ability

Tired of injustice
Inspired by the youth
Work is never really done
Talks of 21

We got BLM and Stop AAPI Hate
Responsibility to create the life I want to see, ain’t no time to wait
Listen, no more room for conflict avoidance
March. Donate. Educate. The hate can’t destroy us

I’m tired of all this so-called solidarity
Not convinced cuz it feels like it’s a tired excuse for inactivity
If you wanna stand by me and rise up for equality
Then you need to actively call out, and fight white supremacy

Tired of injustice
Inspired by the youth
Work is never really done
Talks of 21
